TUESDAY 27 March at 7pm: "Azazel" Stories with Bear

Azazel is a demon. He's also only two-centimetres tall. And he might have power beyond imagination, but given the results he gets, you probably wouldn't want his help.

Bear shares two of Isaac Asimov's story's about the tiny demon, his summoner, George, and the unfortunate recipients of their help. In ‘Writing Time’ an author is exasperated by the amount of time he must spend waiting everywhere he goes and in ‘The Smile That Loses’, a woman asks George to capture her husband's radiantly happy smile in a photograph.  Stories in voice.

MONDAY, March 26th @ 7pm: "The Last Page"

Years, and years ago Caledonia's RL sister bought her a subscription to Smithsonian Magazine, and has faithfully renewed it every year since. For years, and years Cale has immediately opened the back cover to read "The Last Page": short, amusing features written by contributors to the magazine.

The Magazine took on a new Editor recently and this feature has made way for newer innovations. Tonight Caledonia will feature a selection of these delightful sidebars: always funny, often ironic, and even sometimes poignant.

Presented Live in Voice.

SUNDAY, March 25th @ 2pm: TEA TIME with Jane Austen

Caledonia continues her exploration of Jane Austen with selections from one of the author's best known works, PRIDE AND PREDJUDICE (1813) It portrays life in the genteel rural society of the day, and tells of the initial misunderstandings and later mutual enlightenment between Elizabeth Bennet (whose liveliness and quick wit have often attracted readers) and the haughty Darcy.
The title Pride and Prejudice refers (among other things) to the ways in which Elizabeth and Darcy first view each other. The original version of the novel was written in 1796-1797 under the title First Impressions, and was probably in the form of an exchange of letters.

Come Join Caledonia around the fireplace in the lower level of the Library, pour yourself a "cuppa" and sit back and enjoy an hour of Jane Austen.

Gold nuggets cover the banks of a cavernous underground river thousands of feet under a mountain in the Mojave desert, accidentally sealed by a detonation in the 1920's. Deep in the southern California desert rests a Spanish Galleon, sometimes exposed and sometimes covered by the shifting sands, its holds brimming with precious pearls. High among the lofty peaks of the Sierra Nevada lies a golden lake, its bottom pebbled with rich ore, which no one has been able to locate for decades.

One of the Twentieth Century's great Irish storytellers, Walsh's stories are romances of a country intimately known, and well loved, while not avoiding the political conflicts.  Caledonia will be sharing short stories from his collected works, among the best known of which is The Quiet Man.

MAURICE WALSH (Author, 1879-1964) Born in Ballydonoghue, Co. Kerry, Maurice Walsh entered the British civil service in 1901, and was appointed to the excise department in the Highlands of Scotland. When Ireland became a Free State in 1922, Walsh returned to Ireland to help build the customs and excise service of the new State. His first novel, The Key Above the Door, was published in 1923. Walsh went on to write twenty novels and many short stories, the most famous of which is The Quiet Man, which first appeared in the Saturday Evening Post in 1933. Walsh set the story in a collection of stories called Green Rushes two years later. Most of his stories are set either in the Highlands of Scotland or in County Kerry. Other popular novels written by Walsh are While Rivers Run (1926), The Small Dark Man (1929), Blackcock’s Feather (1932) And No Quarter (1937) and Sons of the Swordmaker (1938). His last collection of stories, The Smart Fellow, was written in 1964. Among Mr. Walsh’s legion of fans were J.M. Barrie (Peter Pan) and Ernest Hemingway, who reportedly regarded Walsh as the greatest of all storytellers.
