Kevin, a shrimpy 7th grader on a school camping trip, decides to sneak out at night to climb the legendary Divine Peak. With the school bully, Bertram, harassing him all the way they both reach the top and find ... a pair of sunglasses. Kevin's glasses have been broken by Bertram. He puts on the sunglasses and amazingly, he can see clearly. During a scuffle back at the base of the mountain, Bertram inexplicably follows Kevin's advice to "go jump in the lake." Various other things happen, all related to random comments made by Kevin. Find out what causes all of these events when Gyro shares this story in voice!

Native Hawaiian Storyteller Lani Ka Mehameha graces the Seanchai Library tonight with tales directly from the islands!

Lani has been bringing Live Voice storytelling to SecondLife for more than six years now. Her voice has been called “hypnotic” and “lilting” and “captivating”. Her writing fuses English and Hawaiian with the sounds of chants and the blending of narrative styles of both worlds. She has presented legends, chants, her stories and poetry in Europe, Asia, New Zealand and the Continental United States. She grew up in Hawaii surrounded by classical western and Hawaiian music, art and culture. She speaks French, Hawaiian and English. She has done graduate studies in Hawaiian in the Hawaiian language. As an avid supporter of sovereignty she has lent her support through her voice in song, story and speech to the perpetuation and preservation of her culture.

More from Sense and Sensibility: the lives and loves of the Dashwood sisters: prudent Elinor, expressive Marianne, with the ever adventurous young Margaret and their Mother the widowed Mrs. Dashwood along with them. The novel follows the young ladies and their Mother to their new home, a meager cottage on a distant relative's property, where they experience love, romance and heartbreak.

Jane Austen wrote the first draft of the novel in the form of a novel-in-letters sometime around 1795. The novel may be read as a parody of the full-blown romanticism and sensibility (now "sensitivity") that was fashionable around the 1790s.

Tonight, young queen dragonrider Torene leads the establishment of another community in a crater far to the north and east, named Benden Weyr for the Pern colony's founder and leader Admiral Paul Benden. Torene's queen dragon rises to mate for the first time, and who she mates with decides who shall serve as the Weyrleader of the new Benden Weyr. Story in voice.

This week: Sense and Sensibility

Jane Austen is considered a pioneer of the romance genre of novels, and for the realism portrayed in her novels, is one the most widely read writers in English literature. A work of romantic fiction, Sense and Sensibility is set in southwest England in 1792 through 1797^, and portrays the life and loves of the Dashwood sisters, daughters of their father Henry's second wife, Mrs. Dashwood. The sisters are starkly different from each other; Elinor is the epitome of prudence and self-control while Marianne embodies emotion and enthusiasm. Elinor, Marianne, and their younger sister, Margaret, are left in reduced circumstances when their father dies and his estate is passed onto their half-brother, John.

Tonight's story, "A Christmas Memory" is a largely autobiographical story, which takes place in the 1930s, and describes a period in the lives of the seven-year-old narrator and an elderly woman who is his distant cousin and best friend. The evocative narrative focuses on country life, friendship, and the joy of giving during the Christmas season, and it also gently yet poignantly touches on loneliness and loss.

Truman Capote --- the controversial and tiny, child-voiced man of a mega-writer who needs no introduction. His work still resonates with the deadly Southern charm of making love to a sexy stranger during a sudden summer downpour.

A reader must make his or her own way in these lonely Alabama and Louisiana evenings, accompanied by diamond guitars, lost ladies, childhood bullies, soda shops, society types, bad parents, great Christmases, fearful hidings, identity issues, and American dreams both broken and realized.

The evening will be rounded out with stories from John B. Keane's "An Irish Christmas Feast," all presented live in voice by Shandon Loring.

It is remembered in my family that on Christmas Eve of 1933 my father was late arriving home. That, along with the love he and my mother bestowed upon their eight redheaded offspring, is fact. The rest is fiction.
ALL day the cold Virginia sky had hung low over Walton's Mountain. It was a leaden, silent, moist presence. It promised snow before the fall of night.
This morning Olivia had gone to the upstairs hall where she kept her Christmas Cactus in a spot where the winter sun filtered in through the window.

The Seanchai Library celebrates November 30th, St Andrew's Day (patron Saint of Scotland), with a twist, presenting selections from Shakespeare's The Tragedy of MacBeth (generally known simply as Macbeth). Inspired by accounts from Scottish history in Holinshed's Chronicles (1587), which would have been know to Shakespeare in his day, the events of the story actually have little relationship to their actual historical counterparts.

MacBeth is less about Scotland and more a study of ambition, fate, and consequences. "The Scottish Play" is Shakespeare's shortest tragedy, and is considered by many critics to be his most economically and tightly woven tale.

Did you know Isaac Asimov wrote mysteries as well as about robots? Now is your chance to see another side of the great science fiction writer as Bear Silvershade delves into The Tales of the Black Widowers.
The Black Widowers were based on a literary dining club Asimov belonged to known as the Trap Door Spiders. (Members of the Widowers were based on real-life Spiders, some of them famous writers in their own right.)
Six club members meet once a month at a private room at the Milano restaurant in New York. Each one takes turn to act as host for the evening and brings along a guest for the occasion. The guest may be a friend, relative or colleague from work (women are not allowed at their meetings, though they are very welcome at Seanchai) and after the main course, guest goes on the grill and is asked to justify his existence… and the mystery solving begins. The Irish Seanchai’s of old were storytellers and historians, bards and poets.

In this tradition this Thursday night the Seanchai Library will be presenting a special 30-minute event titled “The Soulful Poet”, highlighting songs that tell a story. This will be a Live Voice, open-mic event hosted by Gimmya Doobie. Since this is a kick-off event, the first half will be introductions and Doobie reading different selections. Then the mic will be opened to guests. So bring a poem or song and come share your “soul” with us. Or just come and listen to the presentations!
(this event will be followed by Shandon Loring live storytelling at 7pm)

All selections should be about 30 seconds to 3 minutes long.
(as part of the fun, be aware that anyone that goes over 3 minutes runs the risk of being "hooked" off the stage SL style - call it sudden death poetry!)

With your kind help and donations, Seanchai Library was able to pass on $125 US to Heifer International in September! That bought a community honey (bees) and a share of the Cheeses of the World Basket (The gift of a heifer, a goat, a sheep and a water buffalo – four animals that families around the world will use to make mozzarella, feta and hundreds of local and traditional cheese varieties.)

Don't miss your last chance to see Seanchai Library's final performance on War of the Worlds tonight.
Now that they are back home at the Library, the Seanchai crew is going to be doing their best to top their two spectacular performances at Blood Evolution Kingdom and Haunted Fruit Islands last weekend. (Review at Living in a Modem World)
For tonight’s show, another voice is going to be added to the cast. Crap Mariner is back in the lineup, after RL commitments forced him to bow out of the first two performances. His unique voice and style is sure to add something special to this final production.
Welles created mass hysteria with a production that mixed news reports and radio programming, voiced by skilled actors, to replicate the events H.G. Wells wrote about in his 1898 novel.
Seanchai's War of the Worlds features the voices of Shandon Loring, Bear Silvershade and Kayden O’Connell. Add in the voices of Crap Mariner, Elder Priestman, Caledonia Skytower, BigRed Coyote and Derry McMahon and this production promises to be a treat for the ears.
"War of the Worlds scared the pants off people back in the '30s, using the power of voice to persuade folks this was real. We plan to generate that same feeling with our production,” said McMahon.
Seanchai's own Caledonia Skytower is directing the production, drawing on the skills of the library's cast of storytellers for a modern-day re-creation, working from the original script by Howard Koch.

Seanchai brings War of the Worlds to Second Life

Halloween is coming and Seanchai Library is getting into the spirit of the season, planning to raise some hairs, chill some bones and tingle some spines with a faithful rendition of the 1938 War of the Worlds radio play created by Orson Welles for Mercury Theatre.

Welles created mass hysteria with a production that mixed news reports and radio programming, voiced by skilled actors, to replicate the events H.G. Wells wrote about in his 1898 novel.

"War of the Worlds scared the pants off people back in the '30s, using the power of voice to persuade folks this was real. We plan to generate that same feeling with our production,” said Derry McMahon.

Seanchai's own Caledonia Skytower is directing the production, drawing on the skills of the library's cast of storytellers for a modern-day re-creation, working from the original script by Howard Koch.

“I remember hearing the L.A. Theatreworks production of this script in the 1990s and imagining what it must have been like to have been listening that October evening in 1938. Orson Welles and company presented it in keeping with the spirit of the Halloween season,” said Skytower.
