TUESDAY, March 31st at 7PM: A WALK IN THE WOODS Continues!

Kayden continues with more to share from Bill Bryson's woodland trail adventure . . . when we last left Bill & Katz they had finally discovered how little of the trail they had actually hiked, and come to the conclusion that they were NOT going to hike the entire length.  So, with resigned acceptance, and no little amount of relief, they procure a cab and skip ahead to Virginia!

The Appalachian Trail trail stretches from Georgia to Maine and covers some of the most breathtaking terrain in America–majestic mountains, silent forests, sparking lakes.

If you’re going to take a hike, it’s probably the place to go. And Bill Bryson is surely the most entertaining guide you’ll find. He introduces us to the history and ecology of the trail and to some of the other hardy (or just foolhardy) folks he meets along the way–and a couple of bears. Already a classic, "A Walk in the Woods" will make you long for the great outdoors (or at least a comfortable chair to sit and read in).

MONDAY, March 30th at 7PM: JACK OF SHADOWS

“Jack of Shadows”
by Roger Zelazny
  • ISBN-13: 978-0451075871

Earth is divided.  The West Pole is dark, full of magic.  The East Pole is perpetual daylight, the world of technology.  Jack derives magic not from a "place of power" but from shadows, the interface between light and dark.

MONDAY, March 30th at 6AM; More form THE EMERALD ATLAS

Cata Charisma shares more from John Stephen's adventure of three orphaned children and a book of magic.

Lost! Found! Betrayal!  What does it all mean, and who can the children trust? More adventure this week.

Upon traveling to the past, they happen across a witch who has enslaved the nearby town in an attempt to find the book, known as the Atlas, that the children possess. As the siblings encounter various magical races in an effort to dispel the witch, Kate discovers that she is intrinsically bound to the Atlas, and that the three children are subject to an ancient prophecy.

SUNDAY, March 29th at 1:30pm: TEA TIME at Baker Street!

Join Corwyn, Kayden, and Caledonia as they continue at the beginning of the Holmesian canon - "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes"

THIS WEEK: The Adventure of the Speckled Band. One of Sherlock's better known and more devious mysteries.

Holmes' client is Helen Stoner, a 32-year-old spinster who lives with her stepfather: Dr. Grimesby Roylott of Stoke Moran. Dr Roylott is the last survivor of what was a wealthy but dissolute and violent tempered aristocratic Anglo-Saxon family of Surrey. After returning from India where he had a large medical practice and had served a jail sentence for killing his native Butler in a fit of rage, Roylott—a widower—settles with his two stepdaughters in the broken-down ancestral manor-all that is left of estates that had extended into Berkshire and Hampshire.

The doctor becomes notorious for terrorizing the local village because of his quarrelsome personality and violent temper. Dr. Roylott has required Miss Stoner, who is engaged to be married, to move into a particular bedroom of his heavily mortgaged ancestral home in Stoke Moran. This room was the one in which two years before, Helen's twin sister Julia had died under mysterious and dramatic circumstances—uttering the last words "The band! The speckled band!"

WEDNESDAY, March 18th at 7PM: GORAK THE GOBBLER

Caledonia shares her newest short story, which will appear in the soon-to-be-released illustrated book The Blackberry & Other Tales That Creep

Twelve is an awkward age, and Jamie Bergstrom is tired of being the object of constant teasing ridicule by some of his classmates. When he expresses his wish that someone would show him how to make his life less miserable, something unexpected - more specifically someone unexpected - happens.

He had been called many things, most of which could not be repeated in decent conversation.  But the designation of his birth, and his actual purpose were depicted clearly in his true name.  He was Gorak the Gobbler and he was on his way, by invocation, to invade young Jamie Bergstrom's life.

SUNDAY, March 15th: TWO STORIES IN TWO VIRTUAL WORLDS

Beware the Ides of March?  You needn't at Seanchai Libraries.  We have two great story sessions today in two virtual worlds:

11:00am at Seanchai Kitely - THE QUIET MAN with Caledonia

If you missed it at Seanchai SL then here's your chance to catch up.  If you are an OS devotee and you haven't heard this story, or Caledonia presenting this story, you are in for a rare treat!

"Shawn Kelvin, a blithe young lad of 20, went to the States to seek his fortune. And 15 years thereafter he returned to his native Kerry, his blitheness sobered and his youth dried to the core, and whether he had made his fortune or whether he had not no one could be knowing for certain. For he was a quiet man, not given to talking about himself and the things he had done."

TEA TIME at Baker Street
Join Corwyn, Kayden, and Caledonia as they continue at the beginning of the Holmesian canon - "The Adventures
of Sherlock Holmes"

THIS WEEK: The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle

As London prepares for Christmas, newspapers report the theft of the near priceless jewel, The "Blue Carbuncle", from the hotel suite of the Countess of Morcar. John Horner, a previously convicted felon, is soon arrested for the theft. Though the police have yet to find the jewel, and despite Horner's claims of innocence, the police are sure that they have the thief - or at least one of them. Horner's record, and his presence in the Countess's room where he was cleaning a fireplace, are all the police need.

At 221B, Watson pays a visit to Holmes, finding the detective contemplating a battered old hat, one brought to him by the commissionaire Peterson. Both the hat and a Christmas goose had been dropped by a man in a scuffle with some street ruffians. Holmes is far more interested in the hat than the goose, which Peterson takes home for dinner. Although the hat bears the owner's name - Henry Baker - the police have little hope of finding the man. Peterson soon returns excited, carrying the Blue Carbuncle, claiming that the carbuncle was found in the found goose's throat. How on earth did it get there?

SATURDAY March 14th at 9am in Kitely - "And Still She Sleeps"

AND STILL SHE SLEEPS...
From Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling's book Black Heart, Ivory Bones
come beguiling tales for the child-that-was and the adult-that-is, stories from some of the most creative artists in contemporary literature. Dissected here are the darker anatomies of the timeless, seemingly simple stories we have long loved. Here wonder and truth have serious bite. Lusts and jealousies, foibles, hatreds, and dangerous obsessions, the things that slyly lurk in the midnight interior of oft-told tales.

Caledonia shares a selection from Morgan Llewellyn's fantasy on the magical lore of  Ireland, centered on one of the great figures of mythical ancient past: Amergin, Bard of the Gaels, son of Milesios Espaine'.  He's a figure out of the ancient past, shrouded in centuries and elaborations.

Most legends and myths are based on some truth, long forgotten . . . so, tonight join Cale  at the firecricle and imagine: what if?

"I am a wind in the sea
I am a sea-wave upon the land
I am the sound of the sea
I am a stag of seven combats
I am a hawk upon a cliff

TUESDAY, March 10th at 7PM: SAINT PATRICK & FRIENDS

Saints Preserve Us!

In American culture there are few saints more familiar than those of Ireland. St. Patrick's day is celebrated far and wide, more than a few believe St. Brendan to have been the first named European to set foot on American soil, and the straw cross of St. Brigid is is not unrecognizable.

But, who were these people? What are the stories behind them?

  • Just where did Brendan go?
  • What's the story behind that woven cross?
  • Did Patrick really drive all the snakes from Ireland's shores?

Find out! Join Cædmon for stories and excerpts of the lives of Ss. Brendan, Brigid, and Patrick, live in voice.

Dr Watson is called upon late at night by a female friend of his wife. Her husband has been absent for several days and, as he is an opium addict, she is sure he has been indulging in a lengthy drug binge in a dangerous East End opium den. Frantic with worry, she seeks Dr. Watson's help in fetching him home. Watson does this, but he also finds his friend Sherlock Holmes in the den, disguised as an old man, trying to extract information about a new case from the addicts in the den.

Mr. Neville St. Clair, a respectable and punctual country businessman, disappears. Making the matter more mysterious is that Mrs. St. Clair is sure that she saw her husband at a second-floor window of the opium den, in Upper Swandam Lane, a rough part of town near the docks. He withdrew into the window immediately, and Mrs. St. Clair is sure that there is something wrong.
